The theme of time, and impermanence takes center stage in this body of work, underlining the notion that what was once perceived as enduring can gracefully undergo transformation.
I am intrigued in ancient photographic techniques that bypass traditional cameras, by using light-sensitive darkroom silver gelatin papers. This series, entitled “Present Tense,” breathes new life into aged darkroom paper, repurposing it into fresh and innovative artistic expressions. The camera-less process involves exposing darkroom paper to UV sunlight, resulting in unexpected and captivating color tones despite starting with black and white paper.
My photographic journey has come full circle—from film to digital, then cell phone, and now back to the analog. Embracing the philosophy of “Slow Photography,” I prioritize the analog process, experimentation, play, and the embrace of chance, in stark contrast to the rapid clicking on a cell phone. This approach pushes the boundaries of what a photograph can be, allowing me to contemplate and invest time in each creation. Each lumen print becomes a unique record of time and a transient state on photo paper.
Similar to mastering light and composition in conventional camera techniques, the lumen process still requires control over light, measured in minutes or hours. However, composition transforms into abstract design, set construction, arrangement of objects, and the creation of photograms.
In essence, my work in Lumen is a unique abstract image created by light and a record of time, captured on photo paper.
This body of work continues my ongoing exploration of creating original one-of-a-kind photo-objects through alternative processes. It’s a journey that pushes the boundaries of photographic materials, and creation of unique photo objects.
